We met at a cosy place around Bricklane in London. Surrounded by spectacular old buildings and interesting people we were trying to catch the vibe of art and started talking about Lina – her life and her creations.

I asked the young designer to list five things that she would consider as key factors in her design. With a bit of hesitation after a brief giggle she admitted:

  • Mess. It has to be a mess.
  • Misunderstanding.
  • Unsafety.
  • Plans.
  • And wine. Wine is important.

As her designs seem to speak themselves the words that Lina want to say, I wanted to find out what makes her the person she is and what makes her designs the way they are. The list of things that she could name as describing her, I decided, would be the best way to do that.

 Animal – tiger

Place – the floor

Person – male

Country – United Kingdom

Material – leather

Colour – black/burgundy

Smell – citron

As she refused to answer the usual question “why do you create?” the only thing left to do was to find out the source of inspiration:

-Just write down “sad”- Lina said.
-Sad?
-Yes, sad. And night/running/people/paper/tissue paper,-she giggles. Rail/tube/smells/chalk/alarm clock/underwear/skin/kissing/cigarettes. Too mainstream,-she adds.

As I concentrated to my notes, creating the next assignment for Lina, she kept looking to the street, observing everyone and everything with a noticeable understanding and approval of what she was looking at. She got surprised as I handed her my notes
-Underline the one you choose from the two given ones,-I said.
After a couple of seconds, I got my notes back. Lina’s look said it was easy.

My conversation with Lina ended and made me learn a couple of things. The first one is about creation – the mind that has an outstanding talent and ability to express itself in clothes. This mind can never be described in a couple of sentences. This mind cannot be looked at from the whole perspective; however, it cannot be collected from the little pieces to become a whole. Our afternoon together proved – Lina’s designs talk themselves. They illustrate individuality and pace of life that lies in the designer herself.
